Stage 1:Thames Barrier to Canary Wharf
Date:13/10/2002
Distance:5 miles
Conditions:Gloomy, grey sky with light showers and drizzle.

The start of the project. The original plan was to walk the 9 miles from the Barrier to Tower Bridge, but I could not resist spending time at the Barrier and stopping off at various points to learn about the history and life of the river. By the time I got to Canary Wharf it was getting dark and cold so I cut the stage short. Apart from the great satisfaction at starting a project I had dreamed about for so many years, I was fascinated by the stark contrasts experienced even in such a short stretch of the river. I looked forward with eager anticipation to the next stage.
